Josué Thomas založil značku 2017 pro své vášně pro Vintage oblečení a kombinujte umění v soudržné vizi. Když vyrostl, oba byli ovlivněni jeho rodiči. Byli to umělci a jeho otec Stefan Gilbert, dokonce krátkou dobu provozovali štítek pro dámské oblečení na krátkou dobu. V dřívějších rozhovorech Thomas uvedl, že jeho preference vintage oblečení se rozruší, že se mu líbila jedinečná kvalita starých kusů ve skříňkách svých rodičů. „Vždycky jsem miloval a vidím staré oblečení mých rodičů,“ řekl v rozhovoru s panem Porterem v roce 2020. „Víš, staré boty mého otce, konverzace a bundy motocyklů. Měl jsem pro určité kousky estetiku brzy a miloval jsem něco zvětralého nebo stárnutí. Má postavu, osobnost.“

Než provozoval svou vlastní značku, 36letý Thomas pracoval v Ralph Lauren ve svých 20 letech. Jako jeden z mála černých zaměstnanců si rychle uvědomil, že jediný způsob, jak vylézt na kariérní žebřík v módním průmyslu, bylo najít jeho vlastní oheň. V roce 2016 začal vyrábět rekonstruované vintage jednotlivé kusy a prodal poncho, které vyrobil ze svých starých věcí, stylistům Johnnyho Deppa. Následující rok Galerie Dept. oficiálně spuštěno.
